Magazine Brief

We have just begun our media course and we have started by creating a magazine brief. I have decided to focus my magazine on the genre of indie rock. I feel this particular genre is not catered to hence making indie rock the perfect subject for a new, innovative magazine. My brief stated the following:

My music magazine will be focused on the genre of indie rock. I feel that there is a gap in the market for a modern indie magazine in the market as NME tends to veer towards more ‘emo’ and metal bands whilst Q is focused on appealing to a mainstream bracket of fans. The target audience will be indie music aficionados, of which the average age is about 15 to 20 year olds and the usual gender is male. We will appeal to this demographic by including articles about up-and-coming indie bands as indie fans always yearn to be first to hear of a new band. The magazine will include interviews with band’s front men which delve into their personality as they will offer tips to prospective musicians. By doing this, the magazine will appeal to potential musicians as well as music-lovers in general. Music fans will also be catered as a free CD is included with each magazine (as already featured by popular music magazines ‘Mojo’ and ‘Q’. There will be reviews thus giving guidance for music fans whilst providing an insight into the industry for prospective performers. Moreover, there will be successful but popular bands on the cover such as ‘Arctic Monkeys’ and ‘Klaxons’. This will appease the mainstream audience whilst also appealing to the non-mainstream indie fans.

The brief was relatively simple to construct as I knew there was a gap in the market and I enjoyed music of that genre.
